Promo push moves 'Rio' discs

A concert featuring Sergio Mendes, exec music producer for Rio, helped promote the feature toons debut on homevideo. A concert featuring Sergio Mendes, exec music producer for Rio, helped promote the feature toons debut on homevideo. Overall homevideo sales may be declining, but that's not necessarily true for family fare, with Fox's "Rio" flying off the shelves during its first week on DVD and Blu-ray.The toon sold more than 2.5 million units in its first six days, breaking records to become the top family title for August, besting Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie." Around 40% of "Rio's" sales were generated from higher-priced discs, like Blu-ray and double-DVD combo packs, which helped boost the amount of revenue going into Fox's coffers. The popularity of "Rio" at retail reflects the continued strong demand for family-friendly pics on DVD this year; six of the top 10 sellers are "Tangled," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part I," "Megamind," "Despicable Me," "Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2" and "Toy Story 3." On Blu-ray, "Deathly Hallows -- Part I" dominates with more than 3 million units; "Tangled" is highest on DVD with more than 6 million discs.Last week's homevid launch for "Rio" was backed by a high-profile promo push of the sort that would normally support a theatrical bow. Studios may have to pony up bigger bucks in the future to entice consumers to buy films, rather than rent them, given how selective they've become during the economic downturn. The marketing effort, emphasizing the summer party aspects of the pic, included extensive TV and online ads; takeovers of 50 malls; tie-ins with 50 promo partners like Chiquita (Daily Variety, July 26), Capri Sun, Little Debbie snack cakes and Applebees; and beach balls, car shades and aerial banners invading beaches in 25 markets. After backing the theatrical release, Rovio's "Angry Birds" franchise promoted the toon by offering 15 additional levels with the purchase of the "Rio" disc. Game also promoted the discs through an ad when paused, providing Fox with millions of impressions given that the game is the top downloaded app in 55 countries.Effort ended last week with a free concert at the Americana at Brand mall in Glendale, Calif., headlined by Sergio Mendes. It attracted more than 7,000 attendees, the most ever for that retail outlet's summer concert series. Mendes also performed on "Latenight with Jimmy Fallon" for the launch."Rio" has earned $479 million worldwide since its April 15 release. It took $143 million domestically. Mary Lynn Rajskub on 24 Movie: "I've Seen Nothing, I've Heard Nothing"

Mary Lynn Rajskub Reporters had plenty of questions for Mary Lynn Rajskub about a possible 24 movie. Unfortunately, the woman who played computer whiz Chloe O'Brian for nine seasons on Fox's spy drama had few answers. "I've heard nothing. I've seen nothing," Rajskub told reporters at CBS' fall TV previews Wednesday about the long-rumored project. Brian Grazer: 24 movie due for 2012 release Shortly after Fox announced that 24's eighth season would be its last, reports surfaced that Jack Bauer would make the leap to the big screen in a European-set adventure. However, the film has hit many speed bumps: thanks to screenplay problems and star Kiefer Sutherland's new midseason TV project at Fox, Touch. "I'm rewriting the script myself," she joked. When asked if she knew whether Chloe would be in the movie, Rajskub again had few answers. "I'd like to think she is. I hope so," she said. "It's either going to be me or Rachel Weisz playing Chloe." Is the 24 movie back on? Fortunately, Rajskub has a new day job to fall back on until Kiefer & Co. come calling. On the new CBS sitcom How to Be a Gentleman, she plays the sister of David Hornsby's character, a manners-obsessed columnist who (slowly) starts to embrace his macho side. Rajskub said she felt it was the right time to transition to comedy after years of helping Jack Bauer save the day. "I love Chloe and 24 and it was an amazing part of my life, but I was ready to lighten it up and do a little comedy," she said. "People have said that I was a little bit funny on 24, so with people laughing at me in a drama, why not be in a comedy and have people laughing on purpose?" Despite the mounting evidence that a 24 movie won't be hitting multiplexes anytime soon, she's staying optimistic. "I hope I can have a couple days off from How to Be a Gentleman to be Chloe," Rajskub said. How to Be a Gentleman premieres on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.

National Geographic Australia's hardest Prison - Lockdown Oz

Over the past decade Australia's prison population has doubled. But of all the States, it's Western Australia that has the highest number of prisoners per population. Incarceration rates here are 40 percent higher than the national average. So what is it about the 'Big Empty' that causes blokes to end up behind bars? Is it more lawless out West? Are the coppers better at catching crooks? Does the convict past have a stronger influence in Australia's largest State? One thing is for sure. Serving time in a WA prison is not for the faint hearted. With prison capacity at an all time high, the cell blocks are overflowing. Casuarina, Western Australia's Maximum Security Prison, is designed for 360 inmates. It currently houses 525. For the first time ever, our cameras go inside Casuarina Prison to witness life behind bars in an Australian Super Max.
